A Young Lady Eventually Enjoyed Her Well-being

Zahra Omar Haji, a 22-year-old woman hailing from the vibrant town of Derek. Married at a young age, she embraced the joys of motherhood with the birth of her son, a lively 3-year-old who brought boundless happiness to her life. Let’s delve deeper into Zahra’s inspiring story.

Zahra used to live in the rural outskirts of Damascus, specifically in (Zabadani), residing in a rented house. Her father worked as a contractor in construction, providing the family with a comfortable financial standing. Zahra, attending school, saw her siblings pursue higher education and employment opportunities.

As the revolution unfolded, Zahra’s once stable life faced turbulence. At the age of 13, amid growing unrest, she actively participated in protests, experiencing the harsh reality of gunfire and arrests. In an unsafe environment, days became a struggle for bread, and constant shelling plunged them into perpetual fear. Zahra found herself trapped in a school during a siege, witnessing destruction and casualties upon their exit.

Fearing for their lives and the well-being of her younger siblings, Zahra’s father decided to leave. They journeyed from detention to Derek, where conditions proved equally challenging. Seeking refuge in Kurdistan, they lived in a cramped tent, enduring storms and harsh circumstances with 12 family members. At the age of 18, compelled by circumstances, Zahra embraced marriage amidst the hardships they faced.

After several months, interference from the husband’s family escalated into harsh words and physical abuse. Zahra sought refuge in her father’s home for about a year. Eventually, she and her husband lived alone, but his behavior changed, leading to multiple instances of violence. He left, expressing a desire for divorce and remarriage, abandoning financial support.

Zahra took legal action, seeking a divorce through the court system. With the assistance of a lawyer and camp administration, multiple sessions passed before her husband returned, displaying a newfound concern for Zahra and their son. He resumed providing financial support, and their focus shifted towards welcoming a new addition to the family.

The assistance provided by the Gashbun GBV program and their visit significantly transformed Zahra’s life, as well as her husband’s, and improved their overall living conditions. The initial visit to their home was met with warmth, where they explained the essential services, secured legal representation, and ensured the stability of their housing situation. This had a profound impact on Zahra and her family.

Zahra’s life underwent a positive change – she gained newfound confidence, knowing she had support and strength to reclaim her rights. Previously feeling weak and indifferent towards herself, Gashbun’s support empowered her to overcome challenges and focus on her well-being. Zahra’s journey illustrates the transformative impact of Gashbun GBV in empowering individuals and rebuilding lives.

She is currently participating in Vocational Training offered by the Gashbun GBV organization, engaging in activities like nail care and makeup at the Gashbun GBV Center in Domiz1 camp.
